- Ceramic grain runs 3–4× longer than standard aluminum oxide on hardwood, MDF, and primer
- Self-sharpening crystals maintain cut rate as the disc wears — no glazing, no burning
- Film backing (PuroFilm) resists tearing on curved surfaces and edge work better than paper
- Universal 47-hole and 49-hole patterns fit Festool ETS 150, Mirka DEROS, DeWalt DWAS150, and most 5" / 6" random-orbit sanders
- PSA and hook-and-loop rolls let you cut custom strip lengths for longboards and hand blocks
- 50-pack quantities cut per-disc cost by 30–40% vs. retail blister packs
Why Your Discs Are Burning Out Too Fast
If you're burning through a pack of discs every few hours on hardwood or primer, the grain is the problem — not your technique. Standard aluminum oxide grains fracture unevenly and load up with swarf quickly. Ceramic grain is engineered to micro-fracture in a controlled way, constantly exposing a fresh cutting edge. The result: you sand longer between disc changes, generate less heat, and get a more consistent scratch pattern from grit 40 all the way to grit 800. Browse the full sanding discs collection to compare all formats side by side.
Ceramic vs. Aluminum Oxide: What the Numbers Show

Grit Selection Guide: Don't Start Too Fine
One of the most common mistakes I see is starting at 120 grit when the surface needs 60 or 80. Ceramic grain is aggressive enough that you can move through grits faster — but skipping the right starting grit means you're working twice as hard for half the result. Here's a quick reference:
| Task | Start Grit | Finish Grit |
|---|---|---|
| Bare hardwood (oak, maple) | 60–80 | 150–180 |
| MDF / plywood | 80–120 | 180–220 |
| Auto primer / filler | 80–120 | 320–400 |
| Paint denib / between coats | 320 | 400–600 |
| Metal / weld seam | 40–60 | 120–180 |
| Drywall / joint compound | 80–120 | 150–180 |
Sander Compatibility: Will These Fit My Machine?
Hole pattern compatibility is the #1 question FastPlus Abrasives USA gets. Here's the short answer: the FF78 47-hole universal disc fits virtually every 6" random-orbit sander on the market. The F65 49-hole disc is purpose-built for Festool ETS 150 and RO 150. The FT77 119-hole disc is designed for Festool's multi-hole system. If you're running a DeWalt DWAS150, Mirka DEROS 650, Bosch ROS65VC, or Makita BO6050J — the FF78 Blue is your disc. Need a cushioned interface layer for contoured surfaces? The 6" interface pad sits between your backing pad and disc to conform to curves without losing dust extraction.
Why 50-Pack Quantities Make Economic Sense
At $21–$27 per 50-pack, FastPlus ceramic discs land at $0.43–$0.54 per disc. Comparable retail blister packs (5-pack) from hardware stores run $1.20–$2.00 per disc for lower-grade abrasive. On a production cabinet job using 30–40 discs, that's $15–$60 in savings per project — before accounting for the longer disc life of ceramic grain. Frequently Asked Questions
Click any question to expand the answer.
Ceramic grain (sol-gel alumina) is engineered to micro-fracture under pressure — each fracture exposes a fresh, sharp cutting edge. Aluminum oxide fractures randomly and glazes over. On hardwood and primer, ceramic grain lasts 3–4× longer per disc. That's not marketing — it's the difference between replacing discs every 20 minutes vs. every hour on a production run. Compare all grain types in our sanding discs collection.
Yes — with the right hole pattern. The F65 49-hole discs are built for Festool ETS 150 and RO 150. The FF78 47-hole universal discs also fit Festool and most other 6" sanders. The FT77 119-hole discs match Festool's multi-hole dust extraction system. FastPlus is not affiliated with Festool — brand names are for compatibility reference only.
PSA (peel-and-stick) bonds directly to a foam or rubber pad — no backing pad needed. Common on longboard sanders for auto body primer work — see the Purple PSA Roll for this use case. Hook-and-loop (velcro) attaches to a backing pad and swaps between grits in seconds — the standard for random-orbit sanders in woodworking and finishing. If you're not sure which your sander uses, check the pad surface: fuzzy = hook-and-loop, smooth rubber = PSA.
Yes. The 2.75" × 13-yard velcro roll and the PSA roll are designed exactly for this. The velcro roll has a chevron multi-hole pattern for dust extraction through the longboard pad. The PSA roll is solid-backed for maximum adhesion on flat rubber pads. Cut to any strip length you need. Pair either roll with the FastPlus Adjustable Longboard Sanding Block for a complete setup.
For oak, maple, or walnut: start at 60–80 grit to remove mill marks, then step to 120 → 150 → 180. Ceramic cuts fast enough that 2–3 passes per grit is all you need before moving up. The most common mistake I see is starting at 120 — you end up chasing scratches that 80 grit would have removed in one pass. The F65 5" disc in 80 grit is a solid starting point for most hardwood jobs.
No. The FT77 strips (2.75" × 7.8" short and 2.75" × 16.5" long) are sized for hand sanding blocks and longboard sanders, not triangular detail sanders. They use hook-and-loop attachment and are a direct fit for the FastPlus Longboard Sanding Block and any 2.75"-wide hand sander. Browse all sanding strips for the full size range.
Blue Line F65 — C-weight paper backing, grits 40–800. Tough, economical, great for general wood and metal. Purple PuroFilm — polyester film backing, grits 80–2000. Film doesn't absorb moisture, resists tearing on curved panels, and holds its shape at fine grits where paper backing starts to break down. If you're doing automotive clear coat or fine furniture finishing, PuroFilm is the right call. See the full film sanding range for all options.
F65 Blue Line: semi-open coat — balanced cut rate and clog resistance, good for wood and metal. FF78 and FT77 film discs: open-coat — grain spacing is wider, so resin, primer, and finish coats clear out of the disc instead of loading up. If you're sanding anything that loads fast (epoxy, lacquer, primer), go open-coat.
Ceramic doesn't glaze the way aluminum oxide does — it just gradually loses cut rate. The signal is when you're making noticeably more passes to get the same scratch depth as a fresh disc. That's the grain exhausted. Don't bother with cleaning sticks at that point — the crystals are spent. Swap it out and grab a fresh disc from the sanding discs collection.
Yes. FastPlus Abrasives USA ships all orders from a US warehouse. Most orders arrive within 3–5 business days via standard shipping. 50-pack quantities are stocked and ready — no lead time, no backorder delays on core SKUs. Shop the full range at fastplus.us.
The FF78 Blue 47-hole universal pattern is your answer. It fits the DeWalt DWAS150, Mirka DEROS 650, Bosch ROS65VC, Makita BO6050J, and virtually every other 6" random-orbit sander. The 47-hole layout aligns with the most common dust port configurations across all major brands. FastPlus is not affiliated with these brands — model names are for compatibility reference only.
FastPlus 50-packs land at $0.43–$0.54 per disc. Hardware store blister packs (5-count) run $1.20–$2.00 per disc for lower-grade abrasive. On a cabinet job using 30–40 discs, that's $15–$60 saved per project — before you factor in ceramic grain lasting 3–4× longer. The math isn't close.
