- 120 grit is the make-or-break grit — it determines whether your stain, primer, or topcoat goes on clean or shows every orbital swirl.
- On open-grain wood (oak, ash, walnut), 120 grit is often the final prep grit before stain — no need to go finer.
- On tight-grain species (maple, cherry) or automotive primer, continue to 150 or 180 after 120.
- Ceramic alumina discs (F65, PuroFilm) last 3–4x longer than aluminum oxide at this grit — the self-sharpening grain matters most in the middle stages where you're covering the most surface area.
- The PSA Purple Film Roll in 120 grit is $10 cheaper than the 80 grit version ($24.99 vs $34.99) — ideal for longboard primer sanding on auto panels.
- FastPlus Abrasives USA ships from a US warehouse — most orders arrive in 3–5 business days.
The Grit That Decides Your Finish Quality
Here's the thing about 120 grit that most people don't realize until they've ruined a finish: it's not just a stepping stone. It's a decision point. Stop here on open-grain oak before staining and you'll get beautiful, even color penetration. Stop here on maple and you'll get blotchy, uneven absorption that no amount of conditioner fully fixes. Use it on auto body filler after 80 and you're set up for a clean primer coat. Skip it and go straight to 180 on fresh filler and you'll be chasing low spots for the rest of the job.
120 grit is where the surface area covered per disc is highest — you're not spot-sanding, you're working the whole panel. That's exactly why disc quality matters more here than at any other stage. A ceramic disc that stays sharp through the whole panel costs more per pack but less per finished surface. FastPlus Abrasives USA carries 120 grit in every format the job demands.
Is 120 Grit the Right Stop for Your Job?
✅ Stop at 120 if you're...
- Staining open-grain wood (oak, ash, walnut, hickory)
- Applying oil finish or penetrating stain to hardwood floors
- Sanding between coats of oil-based primer on auto body
- Prepping MDF edges before paint (with grain filler)
- Removing 80 grit marks before a second body filler skim coat
⚠️ Keep going past 120 if you're...
- Staining tight-grain species (maple, cherry, birch)
- Applying water-based finish (raised grain risk)
- Sanding automotive primer before topcoat
- Finishing furniture that will be painted (go to 150)
- Prepping for lacquer or conversion varnish (go to 150–180)

Which Format Should You Buy?
The format question at 120 grit is simpler than at 80 — you're not doing heavy stock removal, so backing stiffness matters less. What matters is hole pattern (dust extraction keeps the disc cutting longer) and whether you're using a random orbital or a longboard block.
| Your Setup | Best Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Festool ETS 150 / RO 150 | F65 Blue 6" 49H | 49-hole pattern matches Festool pad exactly |
| Mirka DEROS / DEOS | PuroFilm Purple 6" 119H | 119 holes maximize Mirka's dust extraction |
| DeWalt / Makita 5" sander | F65 Blue 5" 8H | Standard 8-hole, ceramic for longer life |
| Any 6" orbital, budget job | F25 Yellow 6" 15H | Lowest cost per disc, solid AO performance |
| Longboard block (hook & loop) | PURO Ceramic Roll H&L | Kiss-cut strips, chevron holes, ceramic grain |
| Longboard block (PSA) | Purple PSA Film Roll | Peel-and-stick, $24.99 at 120G — best value in the roll lineup |
