- 120 grit is the make-or-break grit — it determines whether your stain, primer, or topcoat goes on clean or shows every orbital swirl.
- On open-grain wood (oak, ash, walnut), 120 grit is often the final prep grit before stain — no need to go finer.
- On tight-grain species (maple, cherry) or automotive primer, continue to 150 or 180 grit after 120.
- Ceramic alumina discs (F65, PuroFilm) last 3–4x longer than aluminum oxide at this grit — the self-sharpening grain matters most in the middle stages where you are covering the most surface area.
- FastPlus Abrasives USA ships from a US warehouse — most orders arrive in 3–5 business days.
The Grit That Decides Your Finish Quality
Here is the thing about 120 grit that most people do not realize until they have ruined a finish: it is not just a stepping stone. It is a decision point. Stop here on open-grain oak before staining and you will get beautiful, even color penetration. Stop here on maple and you will get blotchy, uneven absorption that no amount of conditioner fully fixes. Use it on auto body filler after 80 grit and you are set up for a clean primer coat. Skip it and go straight to 180 grit on fresh filler and you will be chasing low spots for the rest of the job.
120 grit is where the surface area covered per disc is highest — you are not spot-sanding, you are working the whole panel. That is exactly why disc quality matters more here than at any other stage. A ceramic disc that stays sharp through the whole panel costs more per pack but less per finished surface. FastPlus Abrasives USA carries 120 grit in every format the job demands.
Is 120 Grit the Right Stop for Your Job?
✅ Stop at 120 grit if you are...
- Staining open-grain wood (oak, ash, walnut, hickory)
- Applying oil finish or penetrating stain to hardwood floors
- Sanding between coats of oil-based primer on auto body
- Prepping MDF edges before paint (with grain filler)
- Removing 80 grit marks before a second body filler skim coat
⚠️ Keep going past 120 grit if you are...
- Staining tight-grain species (maple, cherry, birch)
- Applying water-based finish (raised grain risk)
- Sanding automotive primer before topcoat
- Finishing furniture that will be painted (go to 150 grit)
- Prepping for lacquer or conversion varnish (go to 150–180 grit)
