Identify the defects you are targeting. Orange peel requires 2000 grit first. Minor dust nibs can start at 3000.
Start with the finest grit that will effectively remove your defect. It is easier to start finer and go coarser if needed than to remove coarse scratches.
Use a 6-inch DA (dual action) sander with variable speed. Set speed to medium (8,000-10,000 OPM for most applications).
Wet sanding is recommended for clear coat to prevent loading and reduce heat. Use water with a few drops of dish soap. Dry sanding works for small areas or when water is not practical.
Let the abrasive do the work. Use light pressure and keep the pad flat. Move in overlapping passes.
Once defects are removed, step up to the next finer grit to refine the scratch pattern. 2000 to 3000 to 5000.
After 5000 grit, the surface should have a uniform haze. This is perfect for starting your compounding and polishing process.
